Chinook Salmon

Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha
(from Indian language of the Kamchatka Peninsula)

The largest member of the Salmon species, Chinook are often referred to as King Salmon, especially in the Northern waters off British Columbia and Alaska.  Locally we refer to them as 'Springers' or 'Fall Chinook' depending on the season in which they come in to our sights.   Highly prized, Chinook are very strong fighting fish and battling one of these lunkers to your net is can be a real test of wills. Its hard to not have a lot of respect for these powerful fish. Heavy lines and stout poles help insure that your treasure will not escape.

Chinook have always been highly prized by native Americans who have a spiritual connection to Tshawytscha and often use them in ceremonial feasts. This fish is a great part of NW American tradition, heritage and history. Catch and fillet a Chinook, bake it on a cedar plank over a hot bed of coals, and get set to enjoy true American cuisine.
  • Spring Salmon (Springers) usually start showing up in late March and run as late as early June, the peak of the run being mid April through mid May.
  • Fall Chinook will begin to show in late August and will continue to be caught until mid December.  This run peaks in Mid to late October.
